Winter Dune
Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the great island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this soon to be very snowy Cape Cod, as a giant weather system coming up from the south will be mixing in with some very cold temperatures to the north causing what some call “snow”, and it will be heavy, especially inland Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and of course Maine, as the strong nor’easter continues to spin off in a counterclockwise motion, as all storms in the northern hemisphere tend to do, leaving much of New England under a white blanket upwards of two feet, perhaps more in the Champlain Valley of Burlington and the surrounding areas, as the “lake effect” snow, which I would be happy to talk to you more about, but I don’t have the time right now because of station budget cuts, oops, was that out loud?, leaving upwards of three feet of the white fluffy stuff, and you gotta say Tim, if this wasn’t Christmas, you’d have a whole lot of angry elves out there, ha ha, um, I’m sorry folks did you want to talk about the weather or just make idle chit chat? Yes, Christmas is over for another year, and what a year it has been. We have seen an oil disaster that dwarfed the Exxon Valdez by at least five, spilling at least 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, killing wildlife, marshes and people’s lives, whereby they may never, ever recover, as that oil, Corexit 3500 mix is sitting at the bottom of the Gulf, 5 inches thick, stifling the very basic building blocks of life and thus, will affect fishing in the region for the rest of our lifetimes, our children’s lifetimes, and even our grand children’s lifetimes. This is no joke, and as we all forget about that terrible tragedy, we will see another disaster like this again, yet it will be on land, for the “natural gas” “exploration”, rather, the raping of the land, is being done right now, right here in the good ‘ole USA, where hydraulic fracturing of shale rock, done with high pressure water laced with 596 chemicals is seeping into our water supplies in over 37 states and thus, causing sickness and death to millions of unsuspecting people who don’t know what the slang term for this practice is, “fracking”, and could not care less until it happens to one of their neighbors or themselves. Take upstate New York for example, oh, and by the way, a big shout out! to my great friend’s in Binghamton, New York and their daughters, have a Happy New Year!, where was I, oh, yeah, upstate New York, where the water supply generated from snow pack in the Adirondacks, the deep lakes, and rivers supply that precious resource for over 18 million people in the greater New York City area alone–this is where they get their drinking water FROM! Well, in that rural Adirondack Mountain range, companies like the KOCH brothers and Halliburton are buying up huge tracks of land and plan to “Frack” away, and with NO government oversight, due to the “Cheney built”, becoming law in 2005, and what industry insiders call the “Halliburton Loophole” (whereby Cheney removed the teeth from the EPA and thus, allowed these hoodlums to rape and pillage our land, despite what it does to real live HUMAN BEINGS!) these corporations can literally destroy this country from the inside. Just think about that for a moment. Who benefits from this poisoning? You, the Average American? NO! Halliburton, the KOCH brothers, and Bechtel Industries do, rather the few men at the top do, who are making BILLIONS on this SHAME, this DISGRACE, this TRAVESTY and they should BE HELD TO THE FIRE! As the water supply from the tributaries, estuaries, creeks, rivers and the like carry the 596 chemicals into the resevoirs that are created to serve the needs of said millions of people, guess what happens next? People are going to get sick, very sick and the problem will have gone too far at that juncture, for when you poison anything, be it a river, a Gulf, a piece of land, a person or the mighty ocean, it takes time to heal and must do so or it will most assuredly die. And when the last fish goes, so does man. As George Burns said in the movie, circa 1982, I believe, “Oh God”, with the late, great John Denver, “You try and make a fish out of scratch, you can’t do it, and when the last one is gone, that’s it, goodbye world, goodbye planet, goodbye man, over and out.” Perhaps a little harsh, but if someone doesn’t start saying this real TRUTH a little louder than it is being said on this humble commentary, well then, we are in big trouble. Have a great day everybody and many blessings and peace for the New Year! PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
