They deserve a vote!

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 10:29 am

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the beautiful, cool, sunny island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this thirteenth day of February, 2013, a gorgeous morning here in Hyannis, adjacent to Hyannis Port, where of course OUR 35th President of the United States and his wonderful family called home for so many years, Jack Kennedy. That is where OUR current President, the very fine Barack Obama, began his first ‘State of the Union’ address of his second term. LIVE from OUR nation’s Capitol last night, speaking to the conviction of the aforementioned President’s wisdom and his vision of social justice, equality and opportunity for ALL.  The address, which lasted almost an hour, guided US through many of the issues facing this great country today, beginning with the FACT that this nation’s present state is strong and will get stronger with some bi-partisan efforts on both sides of the aisle.  Closing loop holes for wealthy individuals and corporations while helping out the ‘least among US’, strengthening our education system that includes those poor kids in both urban and rural areas alike, for they ARE OUR future and OUR greatest asset.  He spoke to climate change and the need to tackle it for said future generations, he spoke to the pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens who live in the shadows of society, he spoke to the right for every American citizen to vote, citing a 102 year old in attendance who waited for over six hours to cast her ballot and when she did, proudly put on that little sticker that simply says, “I voted”. He spoke of the ending of the Afghanistan war by 2014 and getting more help for our wounded warriors.  He spoke of the need for continued investment in science, math, engineering and new critical technologies, so that this country can turn a corner in the areas of everything from wind and solar to creating new medical procedures that will save lives in the future all while rebuilding our infrastructure across the board.  But perhaps the most important moment came when he spoke of gun violence and the need for congress to act responsibly and give people like Gabby Giffords, former congresswoman from the great state of Arizona who was shot in the head only a year or so ago, not to mention the horror that was New Town, Connecticut’s Sandy Hook elementary school a real vote, up or down, regarding background checks, a ban on high capacity magazines and assault rifles.  Real legislation most police and members of the NRA, the sane one’s all agree KNOW those weapons have no business on the shores of this great land.  They, the innocent victims of gun violence deserve a vote. He stated this FACT over and over again, and God Willing, they will get one.  A wonderful speech– heartfelt from the beginning to the end, with the country and indeed the world, SEEING what a great country this truly IS, now and forever more.  Have a wonderful day folks and may God, which is LOVE, be with you and yours always.  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
