Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the great island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Sunday morning, coming to you LIVE at 6:15 a.m. from the tiny, tiny seaside village of Osterville, Massachusetts, a mere football toss to Hyannisport, the town that is home to one of our greatest President’s to ever hold office, President Jack Kennedy, where he lived with his wife Jackie, and the rest of that remarkable family that did so much for this nation fifty years ago, a relative blink of the eye in relative cosmic terms. On perhaps Lawrence O’Donnell’s best show yet, “The Last Word, with Lawrence O’Donnell”, airing every week night at 8 p.m. and midnight, only on MSNBC, Lawrence’s segment called “Tonight’s rewrite”, a segment I appreciate as a writer, touched on perhaps this country’s darkest side–the abusive and criminal lobbying power of the National Rifle Association, or the better known as the “NRA”. At this past week’s “CPAC” meeting, the “Conservative Political Action Conference”, the largest republican event of the year, NRA spokesman Wayne Lapierre addressed the crowd, armed, if you will, with a video of one of Lawrence’s “re-writes” from a previous show, where he spoke to the fact that President Obama might fail to mention guns at all in his most recent “State of the Union” address, where many felt he missed an opportunity, in wake of the Tuscon massacre, to speak to the “merchants of death”, the gun and ammunition manufacturers, who have profited from the lifting, by the BUSH administration, of the federal ban on automatic weapons and extended magazines for, by way of example, Glock nine millimeter hand guns, like the one used (a 31 bullet magazine as opposed to the once standard 10 bullet clip that was the only clip available prior to the ban) to shoot one of our congresswomen, a federal judge and a nine year old girl a little over a month and a half ago. I would like, at this juncture, in LIGHT of what we all witnessed Friday night in Egypt, an historic peaceful, non-violent, overthrow of a tyrannical, criminal dictatorship, where one man ruled with an iron fist, for over thirty years, yes, in a REVOLUTION where the “agitators” needed no extended magazines or “assault rifles” to free their people, yes, in LIGHT of that, I wish to bring you Lawrence’s “re-write” LIVE from the shores of Cape Cod, verbatim, so that some of us here in the good ‘ole US of A might wake up to our insane and dangerous policies towards gun control–a nation that has 278 million guns, that we know about, almost as many guns as the population of our great country, currently standing at 308 million souls, enjoy… AND ACTION! Mr. O’Donnell: “In Washington, during the “Conservative Political Action Conference”, otherwise known as “CPAC”, I actually made an appearance, of sorts. It happened while Washington’s lobbyists in favor of murderers rights, to always use the gun of their choice, Wayne Lapierre, the executive Vice President of the NRA, was speaking about the calls for gun and ammunition control in the aftermath of the Tuscon massacre. (flash to the CPAC stage and old Wayne at the podium, a big bully of a man who looks like he’d shoot you, just as soon as look at you)… Wayne: “Predictably, the political opportunists rush to advance their legislative agendas, you all know what I’m talking about, watch this video clip here…” (suddenly a giant projection of Lawrence O’Donnell appears before the now dwarf sized members of CPAC, almost as if it were something right out of an old episode of “Star Trek”, where Lawrence then speaks to the angry crowd, who is obviously agitated by the haunting vision of a man who speaks the TRUTH and common sense, via FACT, as opposed to fiction and fear mongering) Mr. O’Donnell: “On the eve of President Obama’s “State of the Union” address, he is facing mounting pressure to grab onto one of this nation’s third rails in tomorrow’s speech, gun control. In those first few days after the Tuscon massacre, the call for reform started right here, on this network. If the President follows republican and democratic tradition tomorrow night and says not a word about gun or ammunition control, then I, for one, will become disappointed in him for the first time. (flash back to old Wayne at the podium and his boorish speech to the crowd) Wayne: “I want to be clear, that the tragedy in Tuscon was a terrible crime and my heart, and I know yours does too, goes out to all the victims and their loved ones. It’s time for some frank talk, it’s a discussion you sure won’t hear on MSNBC, and you’re not going to read about it in the New York Times, (these people are literate?) because they won’t admit the truth (what, that you are a merchant of death?), they tell you that a government ban on certain firearms and magazines will make you safe…don’t you buy it, not for one second,” (However, I do have a nice piece of property in the Florida swamps I can let you have for a song, just flag me down a little later in the bar after the rest of the presenters fill you up with their crap). Lawrence, LIVE now on his show, “re-writes” this gem of a retort, “You just heard the NRA’s lie, now some FACT. A Justice Department study on the Federal assault weapons ban, which was a law for ten years, concluded that gun murders were down 10.3 percent in states without pre-existing assault weapons bans. 10.3 percent! Another study by the Justice Department in 2004 stated that if the ban was lifted, gun and magazine manufacturers may reintroduce assault weapon models and large capacity magazines, perhaps in substantial numbers, and that is exactly what the merchants of death did, reintroduce assault weapons and high capacity magazines that Jared Loughner used to take 31 shots, 31, before he had to stop and reload. On the NRA’s website, gun violence cheerleader Wayne Lapierre said, “It’s time we acknowledge in our hearts what we know to be true, that the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun, is with a good guy with a gun.” (I wonder if he is friends with James, “she’ll be comin’ round the mountain when she comes,” Inhofe (R-OK) who we all remember via his famous quote, an oldie but a goodie, “global warming is the greatest hoax ever played on the “American people.”?) Wayne, there was a good guy, on the scene that day, in Tuscon, with a gun. But there wasn’t anything he could do, it was too dangerous to fire, he could have hit an innocent bystander. A good guy with a gun did not stop Jared Loughner. It was the moment where Loughner had to reload that he BECAME stoppable, and he was stopped by a sixty one year old woman, who wrestled another high capacity magazine out of his hands as he tried to reload, and an unarmed seventy four year old man, who had already been glazed by one of Loughner’s bullets. The second, the second, Jared Loughner had to stop and reload, he became an unarmed man. Wayne Lapierre wants that reloading to come after crazed gunmen fire as many shots as the designers of high capacity magazines will allow them to. If Jared Loughner had tried to do this in 2003, when those magazines were illegal, he would have had to reload after firing ten bullets. That means he would have been stopped, stopped after firing ten bullets and Tuscon would have had fewer funerals. People in Tuscon were shot and killed thanks to the relentless lobbying work of Wayne Lapierre and his blood drenched organization. Wayne Lapierre has devoted his adult life, every day of his adult life since 1977, to everyday, to making sure mad men in America can fire as many bullets as they want without having to stop and reload. Wayne Lapierre runs an organization that is devoted to expanding the profits of the ‘merchants of death’, gun manufacturers pay his salary, so he can pretend to be representing the rights of hunters who have absolutely no use for the kind of high capacity magazine that Jared Loughner used. Wayne Lapierre is not one of your run of the mill lobbyists…oh no, no. Most lobbyists are good and decent people in fact, some are just as sleazy as you might imagine, and some are criminals, like Jack Abramoff. But none, none, have done more to harm America than Wayne Lapierre. He more than any individual law maker is responsible for this country’s insane gun laws, to allow insane people to mow down congresswomen and nine year old girls, in Safeway parking lots…Wayne Lapierre is morally guilty of being an accessory before the fact of Jared Loughner’s shooting spree in Tuscon, and any member of congress that welcomes him into their office for a little lobbying session, is taking one step closer to the Devil.” and cut, print, wrap. The Peace and JOY we witnessed in Egypt, only a few hours ago, is the polar opposite of what transpired in Tuscon, it’s anti-thesis as it were, for it displayed the SENSELESS violence that is only too easily available in a society that is constantly, 24/7, stoked by fear mongers who claim that a gun will bring you security and, therefore, peace, when it has been demonstrably proven, by the people of Egypt, that FREEDOM can be achieved and ultimately given forever ONLY through peaceable means, peaceable means that do not include high capacity magazines brought to you by the sleazy, horrible lobby and it’s “leader” Wayne Lapierre of the NRA. May GOD continue to grace and inspire the people of Egypt and may WE in this nation, come to believe that violence is never, ever the way, only an avenue to the darkest avenues of the human heart. Have a wonderful Sunday folks and God bless you and yours. PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
