Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket! Hope the weather is cooperating with your plans this morning, as the sun is out in full force at Dowses Beach here in Osterville, with temperatures expected to be near 70 today…come on down and visit us! I wish the situation was improving in the Gulf region today, however, for the whole of the catastrophe is not yet truly known. It has been noted that this man made disaster will dwarf the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska several years ago. The most troubling aspect of this is British Petroleum and it’s efforts to minimize from the beginning. Couple that with the fact that BP has, like every other corporate entity these days, navigated their way around federal regulations on safety and thus, find themselves embroiled in the largest environmental fiasco in modern day history. This is the core problem. We allow these corporations, who answer to no one, to drill for oil off of our precious coast line to produce said oil that is not farmed for domestic consumption, but rather to place on the international market–in other words, a few greedy men are getting rich off of our land (and in this case destroying it), paying off fisherman to the tune of $5000 to “help clean up” all while forcing them to sign a document that states they will promise not to sue said corporation. Pretty damning is it not? Add to all of that deceit, greed and inhumanity the mix of the comic stylings of Rush Limbaugh and the good folks at FOX News who have out done themselves by hinting that the administration actually “caused” the explosion on the rig and thus, put themselves in a position to stop any further oil drilling ANYWHERE in the United States and it’s territories. Again, ironically, this is exactly what we should do. Not blow up rigs, but put an end to drilling for a fuel that we, collectively as a country and world, cannot afford to use any longer. The storms are getting stronger, and yet our response is getting weaker. Can we not see the error of our ways? Has money blinded us to the importance of nature itself? How can we wake up our good friends at FOX NEWS? A lobotomy? My guess is that Rush already had one and made him much worse than he already was. That goes double for Rupert Murdoch (arrrggggghhhhh mattttiieeeee!) who is more of a pirate than anyone off the coast of Somalia. Have a wonderful day everybody! Peace~ M
