“Souls to the polls”
Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the dark and stormy (hurricane force winds and rain) island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on a very, very early Sunday morning, 5:49 a.m. to be precise, this second day of November, 2014, listening to the driving rains and extreme wind howling outside of my window here on the Hyannis/Hyannis Port Waterfront–a good day to just batten down the hatches and watch the Patriots beat up on the Broncos…
Today, in the Western Catholic/Christian faith, is “All Souls Day”, the day after “All Saints Day” (1 November), preceded by it’s vigil Halloween (October 31); a day of prayer for the dead, particularly but not exclusively one’s relatives.
The root of Halloween “hallow”–mean holy. The suffix “een” is an abbreviation of “evening”. It refers to the “Eve of the Hallows”, the night before the Christian holy day that honors saintly people of the past. “All Saints” is a celebration of the communion of saints, those people we believe are in heaven, through good works and God’s grace.
All Souls Day is a day to pray for all souls. Among Catholics, like Pope Francis, more than a thousand years ago, in the countries of Ireland and Great Britain, a common custom of those early Christian faithful was to come together on the eve of the feast of “All Hallows Day” to ask for God’s Blessing and protection from evil in the world. Often, they would dress in costumes of saints or evil spirits and act out the battle between good and evil around bonfires. This is the historical source of the modern observation of Halloween.
Today, it’s not an act, it is real, being played out right in front of our noses on the TV machine. Of course, ’sexy Ebola nurse’ did not come up in any of the images taken from the ancient Google machine left by the aliens ’round that ‘time’… Nor did we think we would SEA good and evil being played out so obviously in 21st century U.S. politics, where ‘free market’ capitalism is gunning for the little letter ‘d’ in the word democracy, lo, where ‘they’ could (a few greedy plutocrats and their puppets political hack minions), “…shrink the government down to the size where they could drown it in a bathtub…”. A direct quote from a 21st Century U.S. Republican operative, whom you should pray for, for he knows not what he does… That is if you are into that whole Jesus thing of love, kindness and most of all forgiveness. You know, the hardest thing for any of us human beings to do, that whole ‘praying for thine enemies’ kind of thing. Grover Norquist, consider yourself forgiven. Not that you give a damn.
So on this All Souls Day, let US bow our heads and ask for help from the Divine. Get out the VOTE!!!
Just like in the movie “The Blues Brothers”, circa 1982, we all need to spread the word, ’cause our little butts are in this thing too.’ The world once looked to America for real leadership, as a moral compass. Our actions do not live up to our words, indeed, the deeds of this ‘not your grandfather’s GOP‘, do not reflect the everyday interests’ of 99 percent of the real American people, they simply do not care about them at all, it’s as if they don’t have a heart.
LET’S BE HONEST! Armed with the TRUTH, one must vote Democrat with only two days left until that important election on Tuesday, November 4th. That is if one wishes to remain in a democracy where YOUR voice counts, your soul rather.
All done the way the founding fathers set it up to begin with.
Not a place where .000001 percent of the people enjoy all the fruits of this great land, rigging the game, while destroying the planet for their PROFIT! The plans these Oligarchs have for our country border on the sociopath–the very definition being a complete disregard for other people’s (and their families) feelings, lives or futures!
This new GOP is simply UN-American.
Have a great day everybody, SEA you right here tomorrow; same bat time, same bat channel!
PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
