Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the great island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Wednesday morning, the ninth day of February, 2011, and with the dawning of a new day here in Osterville, I bid you and yours a fair and fine adieu. The 112th congress is no longer encapsulated by the cliched definition, embodied by republican members of the 111th congress, “the party of hell no”, rather, it has devolved into the “do nothing congress,” where the members now take a week off from work, called a “constituent work week“, for every two they are actually in D.C…. The light GOP schedule is a joke, as we remember their vow in the 2010 campaign season to “roll up their shirt sleeves” and get “America back to work”, while they, ironically, have produced no new ideas, no inspiring rhetoric, and have put forth NO real SOLUTIONS to the country’s problems. Instead, have redoubled focusing their attention on the “culture war” issues that have been the bread and butter of the republican party since the days of John Birch and now Glenn Beck. It is a tried and true avenue for the “conservative, small government, war cry” to begin chipping away at the socially progressive winners that have made this country a more palatable place to live within. Winners such as the 1964 Civil RIGHTS act, Roe v. Wade, Gay rights, DADT, the Clean Drinking Water Act, and, well, the list just goes on and on. Take, for example, the number one republican agenda right NOW on Capitol Hill, ABORTION. H.R. 3, the “No tax payer funding for abortions Act,” one of three abortion, ‘pro-life’, or anti-abortion bills that are currently in play not only in Washington, but in states like Wyoming, where the party that now believes in less government, the “keep your damn hands off my Medicare!” crowd, now wants to keep tabs on every pregnancy in the United States, outlawing abortions for even those women who have been a victim of rape or incest. This is what a culture war IS. Taking radical steps to tell the “free” American people what they should be doing with their own bodies. Of course, that is assuming those republicans in question truly consider poor women to be on an equal footing with powerful members of the House of Representatives, or their brethren over at the United States Senate. Eric Cantor, who, along with the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, will be meeting with the President today discussing the upcoming budget battle, where the brave newly elected majority in the House has presented a whopping 31 billion dollar cut to the federal budget projections for this upcoming fiscal year, much less than the promised 100 billion dollar budget cut, is way out on front with this one–a brave and foolish move on his behalf. Cantor, the House majority leader, tweeted this gem a day and a half ago, “Today’s job report reveals far too many people remain out of work, that’s why all of our efforts are centered around jobs…” Really Eric? Your rigorous schedule, and that of your fellow republicans, does not reflect that wish, or fantasy, and your actions, while you are in session, don’t either. What did your old mentor, “W”, used to say?… “Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, well, you just can’t get fooled again…” The bottom line is this, the republican party IS for new jobs–new jobs for Chinese, Indian, Brazilian, Chilean, and South Korean workers, as those corporations pay those poor workers much less than their American counterparts, for those jobs help the bottom line of Fortune 100 companies, now global, with no national ties, no jingoistic loyalties, and it is the WILL of those companies, and the drive for PROFIT over PEOPLE, that fuel the agenda of the pro-business environment that IS the republican party. Culture wars? They don’t see it as a war, but, as the new American path, the new American MORALITY, where the “little people” are not only expendable, but are literally in the way of “progress”–for who really cares about the cowboy in Colorado, a cattle rancher, several generations in, whom I mentioned yesterday, a man whose land has been poisoned forever by the monsters at Halliburton and KOCH Industries, who have raped and pillaged Wyoming public lands with 596 chemicals left over from the ‘fracking’ process, in order to attain “natural gas”, turning fresh drinking water into a stew of what they call “processed water”, chalk full of those deadly chemicals that are currently seeping into our vital water supply, killing our citizens, our wildlife and our precious mountain meadows, streams and lakes–destroying them, en masse, in over 37 states now, in a country that was so aptly named “Gas Land” by the creators of the HBO documentary of the same name. I pray that someone wakes up to this two prong attack on the “American people”, a cliche the republicans so clearly love to say, where they, on the one hand, want a “smaller government” (while they tell women, especially poor women, what the can and can’t do with their own bodies) and yet, on the other, want the luxury of “big government” when it comes to engaging in illegal wars, such as Iraq, where, all in the name of paranoia and oil, the BUSH era administration racked up unprecedented deficits, that are still being felt, via the Afghanistan war, the longest war in American history, a war that has lost sight of it’s initial intention, where we are spending 2 billion dollars a week waging war, a war we are LOSING by the way. The system is broken, as the deregulation of Wall Street, that has evolved over the past 30 years, prompted the 2008 collapse of the world financial markets, scapegoated through Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and those damn poor people who should not have taken the bait of those predatory loans that were developed by shady investment banking firms, such as Goldman Sachs, in the form of ‘credit default swaps’, or derivatives, bundled and then re-bundled, bet on and counter betted on, building a house of cards that, when it fell, fell to the “little people” to lend a hand in bailing the bums out. I wonder what the pure members of the tea party think of all of this nonsense the republicans, they put in power, are actively spewing? A true funnel of HORSESH$T! The republican message is so full of holes it would sink in the Nantucket Sound. I would have so much more respect for a “man” like Cantor if he stood up and just told the TRUTH, something like, “Hi, I’m Eric Cantor, I would just like to come clean and tell you all that we don’t give a damn about anyone who is not in the game, for the poor and the hungry merely represent speed bumps to our real mission, and that is to maximize corporate profits, to the detriment of our people, our environment and our conscience. We don’t care about social issues, because we don’t care about the “American people”, well, 98 percent of them anyway. We do want them to continue to pay taxes however, but we will ask that they respect our “religion” of “Christianity” when we tell the women out there, as this is our number one culture war issue now, that they no longer have rights to their bodies, and although we believe in smaller government, we will use the power of the federal government to stop those women, especially the poor and disenfranchised, from getting an abortion, because, thanks to the blank check, in 2002, to the NSA and 10 other top secret agencies, huddled in some secret location in Maryland, we now know everything about your pregnancy, and as your ‘big brother’, we will tell you what to think, say, do and who you should BELIEVE IN. Thank you for listening and don’t forget to tip your waitresses.” The “do nothing congress”–sort of has a ring to it, does it not? Stay tuned everybody… same bat station, same bat channel. Have a wonderful day folks! PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
