Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the once again rainy, windy and cool island of Nantucket! Great to be with you once again on this October second morn’, 2014, very early here in Hyannis/Hyannis Port, around six thirty in the a.m., the sound of the steady rain outside of my office window… Yes sir, this little sand bar and the Island received another good soaking overnight, taking the moisture as it is needed, not as much as it is needed in California–but needed nonetheless…
The media was on full alert yesterday with a White House press conference held to discuss the various problems facing this nation right NOW. The first Ebola case in the U.S. (along with a humanitarian crisis in Africa regarding that deadly disease), the air strikes against ISIL, the confusing issue of ‘the free Syrian rebels’ and the ongoing headache of the unrest in Ukraine. But nothing got as much attention as the resignation of top brass at the Secret Service, who has managed to drop the ball when protecting our excellent President Barack Obama from threats, both domestic and foreign. Ms. Julia Pierson, the acting Director after the “Colombian prostitute scandal in 2011″ appeared in front of a Senate Oversight Committee before she either was forced out or left on her own. During her testimony she offered no concrete reason for the Secret Service’s failure to stop a man from jumping the White House fence, running through 5 different security check points and entering the White House itself. Running the length of the East Room (80 feet long) before being tackled by an off duty agent near the entrance to the Green Room. This coupled with a leak of the story of a man working security for the CDC, armed with a gun, was reportedly fired after asking the President for a ’selfy’ in the elevator, a MAJOR breach in SS field superiority… Add all of that to the seven gun shots fired at the White House by a guy who had an arsenal in his car, with agents on the ground smelling gun powder and agents at the White House telling officers ‘nothing to see here, it was just a construction crew backfiring, no bullet holes from a high powered rifle 700 yards away or so… These massive failures led to Obama calling for a change in leadership at the once proud (and will be again) Secret Service–a group charged with protecting the most important man in the country, his family and the symbol of the most powerful job in the most powerful country on the face of planet earth–The President of the United States of America.
There was much outrage from both sides of the aisle on this one (proving WE, the country, can agree on something), none so much than by the great Congressman Elijah Cummings, who spoke out vociferously in that meeting on Capitol Hill before Pierson resigned, calling the lack of morale, leadership and the absence of that old ‘can do’ attitude unacceptable and must be addressed immediately. It seems that if we protect our CEO’s around this country (like the new head of U.S. Secret Service Joseph Clancy leaving his ‘post’ protecting the very important CEO of Comcast and his family. Comcast being, of course, parent company to NBC, lest we forget, and everyone’s favorite reasonably priced cable giant, ‘programing crap since 1996…) with highly motivated armed guards and sophisticated security systems (like a locked door!), the country, it’s leaders in Washington D.C., and the world at large would not be so worked up about this armed man (with a knife) who entered that sacred building only days ago, steps away from the First Family’s residence upstairs. Nor would they be upset that that same Secret Service detail–’the forward ops’ those whose job it is to scout out the territory before POTUS is on the move, yes even in an elevator–allowed a man with a significant criminal background, and a gun, to be standing next to our beloved President in a small elevator. It just doesn’t make any sense.
Not to mention that ‘interpreter, a fake hearing impaired interrupter, who gave us all quite a show at Nelson Mandala’s funeral a few months back, giving the world pause for a moment, perhaps asking collectively–”…what the heck is that? Sign language? Don’t look like no sign language to me! Get me Langley stat, Gosh Darnit! You boys–got some ‘esplainin’ to do–ain’t that right Lucy!”
Have a nice Thursday everybody, stay dry and remember that this is all an illusion. Like the song says, ‘row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream… (Mums’ the word.) PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
