“Beam me up!”
Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the sunny, brisk and quite delightful island of Nantucket! Good to be with you on a Friday afternoon, this 27th day of February, 2015, a sad day for all you Star Trek fans out there, this reporter included, for Leonard Nimoy (actor, author, poet, director and humanitarian), passed away at the age of 83 in Boston, his hometown. A man known around this planet (perhaps others?), as “Spock”. The quiet, confident, well spoken Vulcan known for his quick wit, powerful fighting techniques, mind melding, death defying feats of bravery, logic, super intelligence, compassion, lack of emotion, wisdom and at times a touching, vulnerable half human side. Who would not argue it was the ‘human’ side that got “Kirk” out of more jams than he would probably ever admit?
He will be missed, saying it all with his last tweet from this earthly plane, “A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory, LLAP” (’live long and prosper!’)…
Like “Spock!” some of us in living in the United States would like to ‘beam up’ or just beam away from all of this utter nonsense going on in Congress as I write these words… It seems the Republican knuckle dragging fake ‘grass roots tea party’ nut jobs are up to their old tricks, with poor old Speaker of the House, Mr. John Boehner left so punch drunk he is blowing kisses to his many admirers in the audience; all posing as reporters for his amusement? The funding bill that funds DHS (Department of Homeland Security), for a measly three week extension on what is supposedly the most important item on the GOP agenda–national security–looks like it does not have enough Republican votes in the House of Representatives, most of whom won’t take a hit because they represent ’safe’ districts. So, the nation may or may not have a fully funded group tasked with watching the collective American back, and if they are doing that job, they are not getting paid for it. (update: six p.m., eastern, the House failed to pass the bill, so as of 12:01 a.m., America will not have a fully funded DHS, well done boys! Weekend Update II--U.S. Congress funded DHS for 7 days! Stay tuned all week for more coverage of this nutty GOP caucus; who clearly never had or will have the majority of “the American people’s” best interests in their collective frontal lobes, assuming they have any to begin with. The only interests they serve are those of people like ‘the Koch Brothers’, who are attempting to quietly BUY the Executive via the perfect political puppet in Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. A ‘leader’ who views hard working Wisconsin families (in unions or not!) and students in the same “light” as the terror group known around the world as ISIL.
Meanwhile, at the annual (and rather nauseating), “CPAC” get together of the crazies (conservative political action conference)–going on all week folks! Don’t forget to tip your waitresses!–the nation waits to see how Jeb Bush is received by always wonderful, but ravenous group of corporate boot lickers (unbeknownst to most of them; those insane delegates with the glazed, half crazed look in their collective eyes), a group that just loved puppet-on-a-string (copy written), Wisconsin Governor and GOP (Koch Brother puppet) favorite son (at present), give it up for Scott, “ISIL=Wisconsin unions/teachers/university professors/universities/environment/journalist who don’t work for FOX “news”…, Walker! You Betcha! As the great Rachel Maddow of “TRMS” always says on her venerable show weeknights at nine eastern, “…watch this space!” Yours, mine, heck, OURS! Protecting that hard fought for democracy with that little letter ‘d’ may just depend upon it!
Have a nice week end folks, hopefully tuning into the “weather report” from our pal from the great state of Oklahoma, Senator James, “global warming is the greatest hoax ever played upon the American people”, Inhofe, who brought a snow ball onto the Senate floor yesterday, ‘proving’ his world renown ‘theory’ that this whole warming of the planet due to our collective spewing of Carbon/Methane and other green house gasses into the atmosphere can’t be true ’cause of this here snowball, ya see!’
And for that bit of Senate theater, I am grateful, even as another bloody pipeline for ‘natural gas’ tries to weave it’s perilous path through the pristine upstate New York forests, mountains and streams, those precious water ways soon to be full of poisonous fracking fluid if something is not done about it. Today is the deadline for the public comment period for the ‘project’ that is claiming “eminent domain” to destroy just another piece of our precious and irreplaceable wilderness. Proving that PROFIT beats ‘little, ordinary American people’ any old day of the week! Please Google or log onto “stopthepipeline.org” to stave off yet another ecological disaster waiting to happen in this never ending-the modus operandi--cycle of corporate greed. One can hear the wild, insane calls for more echoing off of the granite mountains, “profit over people, profit over people, profit over people!”
