A real patriot
Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the clouding, warm, breezy, beautiful, bouncy island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Seventeenth Day of April, 2017; “Patriots Day” here in the great state of Massachusetts and by now, on this almost summer like Monday ‘down on the docks’ of ye ‘ole Hyannis Harbor, 67 miles North in the fabulous city of Boston, the fabled “Boston Marathon”–121st edition–is over for the elite runners, with the rest of the thousands of exhausted joggers wondering if they will make it over ‘heartbreak hill’… Apparently a white guy won, no, just kidding, it was a Kenyan, Geoffrey Kirui; winning this brutal 26 plus mile course in a ‘time’ of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 37 seconds. In fact the Kenyan crew swept the race, bringing home ‘the gold’ to a country now known for not only it’s Elephants, Lions, Hippos, Rhinos, Cheetahs, Leopards, Alligators, Gorillas and Gazelles, but for these amazing world class athletes as well.
Well done Kenya!
But what! The day is not over! Our beloved Boston Red Sox are still battling it out in a game that always starts at 11 a.m. on this state holiday that no one else in this great land is even aware of…
Massachusetts is perhaps the greatest reminder of how strong this nation, this Republic, still is.
And hopefully always will be…
Civic pride of the non-egoistic variety can be seen in almost every town, suburb and city one investigates. From the dizzying heights of Pilgrim Monument at the furthest eastern point, Provincetown, to that 60 story John Hancock Tower (corporate sponsor of said race), where this humble reporter once worked; from these here sometimes lonely docks of Hyannis Harbor, to the cobblestone streets of Nantucket, one cannot go wrong. Unless, of course, you forget your cash. For at the Boston Marathon, they don’t take ‘American Express’. Lo, the beers are a flowin’, the girls are a flirtin’, the guys are a flexin’ and this here summer is getting ready to take off!
