7.1 Million

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 10:47 am

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the sunny, mild, calm and pristine island of Nantucket!  Great to be with you and yours on this second day of April, 2014, a beautiful morning here on little old Cape Cod, with spring most certainly in the air.  Yesterday at the White House Rose Garden, President Barack Obama gave a speech announcing the results of the hard fought Affordable Care Act of 2010, many know today as “Obamacare” (a term that strikes either fancy or  elevated blood pressure, depending upon what side of the political fence you are on), as Monday marked the end of the ‘open enrollment period’ (March 31) for this pivotal year.  The number the CBO (congressional budget office) predicted for this LAW to be effective (to work) was 7 million, and with the snafu of the roll out, namely the botched website and lack of salesmanship by governors around the U.S., back in October of 2013, it was a real question of whether or not this thing would take off at all.

However, as the President remarked amongst the flowering roses, 7.1 million Americans have signed up for coverage, many gaining health coverage for the first time, elevating this moment to be one for the history books. For it has been seven decades of effort by former U.S. Presidents and other leaders, such as the great Senator Teddy Kennedy “The Last Lion of the Senate” (D) from this great state of Massachusetts, to reach this plateau–Affordable Health Care for all, a most sacred of human rights, a right that will not only make this nation stronger economically and physically, but will bring it together even more as 24 million sign up by 2017.

Of course, the right wing slime machine is hard at work telling the country that “Obama CARE(s)” is an evil, socialistic Kenyan plot to take away your freedom, guns, wives, daughters, Cheetos (hi Morning Joe!) and did I mention freedom?  None of the predictions on FOX “News” were accurate, in fact, they were all WRONG, as usual.  So today, on this second day of April, celebrate this leader of OURS, for many decades from now, he, Barack Obama, will go down as one of the best Presidents we have ever had in this fair land called America, for it was not a popular (still is not in many states) notion, health care, (unless it makes money for Wall Street), yet the President forged ahead anyway, with a cool head, and won the fight in the end.  Who knows how that will affect the balance of the Senate this year?  But it will not matter, because now that Americans have a taste of what good health insurance looks and smells like, they will not go back to the old status quo of the insurance companies posing as health care providers.

Have a great day and a special double congratulations to MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, host of “All In, with Chris Hayes”, airing every weeknight at eight p.m. eastern, only on the highly fact based network known as that damn liberal MSNBC! For Chris is a new father and his show is one year old (yesterday) today–no April fool there!  Good Luck to you all and keep up the good fight, and we here at seacapecod.net will do the same.  So come on down and visit this summer, we will, as always, ‘leave the LIGHT on for ya!’ PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
