‘Not in my FRACK yard!’

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 10:45 am

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the once again cold, cloudy and calm island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Wednesday morning, the twenty-sixth day of February, 2014, and as you can peruse from the image above (seacapecod.net’s backyard)–All’s quiet on the western front…

However, that sentiment is not echoing in the great state of Texas right about now, ‘ain’t that right ExxonMobil’s CEO Rex Tillerson?   This courageous man resides in Bartonville, Texas and is angry about a 140 foot water tower that has been put up near his horse ranch and very expensive home.  You see, the process of ‘fracking’, or hydraulic fracturing of shale rock far below the earth’s surface, breaking up that rock to release ‘natural gas’, turns out to be a very dirty, loud and dangerous business.  Unfortunately for anyone living in or around these soon to be millions of wells all over the country, it is exactly that water they are most worried about.  596 deadly chemicals go into the fracking process of shooting high pressurized water, laced with said chemicals, deep into the rock and according to ‘ole ‘TREX’, can I call you that sir?, “…there has not been a documented case of substantial, or even, I would argue, even insignificant contamination of fresh water as a result of hydraulic fracturing…so I think the fears have been misplaced, ah, er, some has been through a lot of less than perfect information that has been provided…”.  RIGHT. Tell that to the people of Rifle, Colorado or Dish, Texas a$$hole!  While you and your buddies get richer than God off of people’s lives, the world is watching and reporting your blind hypocrisy and brutal methods of bullying good American people into living with your deadly secret cocktail of chemicals, methane (100 times more potent than carbon dioxide) leaks and noise pollution that comes in the way of a 24/7 operation of well sites– including trucks, bright lights and deafening sounds disrupting and making dangerous everyday life for the people who have leased that land (or live near the drilled public lands in, for example, Wyoming where Dick Cheney began in 2005 with the “Halliburton Loophole” that takes out the Clean Water Act of 1973 altogether, taking care of Wyoming’s beauty by putting up wells right next to Yellowstone National Park for instance, where these bastards can now drill on public land, free to pollute public water and air en masse) to say the country’s largest natural gas producer and biggest oil company in the world, ExxonMobil.

That noise and ‘eye sore’ of a water tower–not a well site mind you, so near to the blessed residence of the ‘dear leader and CEO’ in Bartonville–has brought forth cries from sea to shining sea of blatant hypocrisy, while ‘the man’ fracks the $hit out of an area of the country the size of California and Florida combined, with an projected 2 million more wells poised to be raised in the coming decade, sooner if ‘ole TREX gets his way, “…but not in my backyard dag nabbit!”. Chris Hayes, host of “All IN”, a great truth source and super news show, weeknights at eight p.m., eastern, only on MSNBC (not a paid Ad!), had as his guest, Josh Fox, creator of the extraordinary and brilliant documentary film, “Gasland” and “Gasland II”, who said, “…either Rex has joined the anti-fracking movement or he has completely exposed all the hypocrisy, the brutality and unfairness in this entire system.”  The TREX language in the lawsuit speaks of ‘property values’, trucks, noises, and the possibility that ooooops, your water has been poisoned for generations, or perhaps forever, sorry…, regional air pollution, chemicals volatilizing in the air…oh my God, sixty years of FRACKING?  We are going to cook the planet, as Washington D.C. is not helping, allowing 400,000 dollars a day in lobbying for the oil and gas industry in the fracking segment alone!  Yes sir, ‘ole TREX and his high priced lawyers only CEO’s of giant monster’s like ExxonMobil can afford, yes, those lawyers ‘be lookin’ at the value of his property, stating, “…it’s unique and irreplaceable.”  Apparently Bartonville is the only place those traits are true.  The law suit went on to say, “…it’s (fracking) detrimental to public health, safety, morals and general welfare.”  Hmmmm.  Words also used, “negligence, gross negligence and malice.”

Chris Hayes then asks Josh Fox,”How does ExxonMobil respond to similar law suits?”  Josh, “Complete denial, they have spent millions of dollars to discredit the reporting.  My film “Gasland” for example reports that 15 million people live within one mile of a fracking well, and this campaign is in it’s infancy.”  Nice.

Representative Jared Polis of Colorado (his district represents small towns like Lafayette, with 25,000 people and Broomfield with 45,000 who have taken matters into their own hands, passing moratoriums stopping fracking for a few years, only to be sued by the mega billion dollar corporation, TREX’s ExxonMobil.  So the very people that don’t want it in their neck of the woods are effectively making others frack against their will–striking) believes this is a form of corporate bullying and why not?  It is par for the course in a bought and sold congress and indeed country, with the Nation Magazine reporting on the 21st, “…with little or no fanfare, one of Chevron’s top lobbyists, Stephen Sayle, has become a senior staff member on the House Committee on Science, the standing congressional committee charged with ‘maintaining our scientific and technical leadership in the world”, FREE to lead others into destroying the earth’s water sources one fracking well at a time.  PROFIT over people once again, the new normal economic platform of the ‘not your grand daddy’s GOP’ who have sold their constituents down a dark and dirty river that they themselves created, placed American people up that river without a fracking paddle!

As Jim Hightower, former Texas Agricultural Commissioner stated on Chris’s show yesterday, “…These guys are making so much money they could air-condition hell.  I tell you what, they better be setting aside some money for that project I think…”  You may be right my man, you may be right.  Have a great day folks and rest of the week.  Don’t take any wooden nickles from FOX “NEWS” though, side effects still include, nausea, blurred vision, stiffness of the joints, paranoia and delusions of grandeur. PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

Harold Ramis 1944-2014

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 9:31 am

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the sunny, brisk, peaceful island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Tuesday morning, the 25th day of February, 2014 and it is a sad day for this reporter here on this little sand bar created by the Last Great Ice Age 11,500 years ago…, for yesterday one of my all time heroes in this world died at the young age of 69.  Harold Ramis passed from this earthly plane in Chicago on Monday due to complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, and took with him all the talent he displayed while living so briefly in this often cruel and hurtful world.

He pushed comedy to a different level and brought MUCH joy to people all over the world with his acting, his directing, but none so much as his WRITING!  Considered comic royalty in the 1970’s and 1980’s with hit movie after hit satirical gem–movies that every comedian worth his/her salt praised–John Belushi being the first, starring in Harold’s first co-written success, monster success in 1978 with “National Lampoon’s Animal House”, where a fraternity goes to war against the Dean of “Faber College” in upstate New York.  It did not stop there, he went on to create and sometimes star in movies you might recall, such as “Ghostbusters”, “Stripes”, “Groundhog Day”, “Analyze This”, “Analyze That” and of course, “Caddyshack”, my personal favorite.  “Buy Bushwood! You, You! You saw it, he tried to choke me!”  “He called me an Orangutang, he thinks I’m his wife…” (credit the aforementioned film and the late, greats Ted Knight and Rodney Dangerfield).

When I was a relatively young lad at UVM, University of Vermont in the 80’s, I was first introduced to Harold’s early work with Bill Murray in a little boot leg ‘National Lampoon’ tape called, “That’s not funny, it’s sick”, a journey I highly recommend, for it proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that this comic GENIUS only comes around once in a blue moon, upon first hearing it, I laughed harder and longer than I ever have.  It is rare, like I have already said, that we get to be invited into the mind of such a great writer, actor, director and human being who has a special place in this humble commentator’s heart, for he gave me courage to write what I want and to hell with the ‘establishment’, an establishment, like Bushwood, that is getting rather stale don’t you think?  Ramis once said, “…comedy is inherently subversive”, hallelujah brother!  He went on to say, “…We represent the underdog as comedy usually speaks for the lower classes, we attack the winners.”  And Paul Weingarten once wrote in The Chicago Tribune Magazine in 1983, “Harold Ramis has shaped this generation’s idea of what is funny…”, and I would say he will continue to do so for a very, very long time, for pure comedy like that does not die, like wine, it just gets better with age.

So on this rather selfishly sad day for many in the writer’s world and beyond, I bid GOD’S SPEED to Sir Harold Ramis, the King of Comedy. I will leave you with some of the more memorable quotes from his brilliant and tragically short career… “I don’t ‘tink ‘da heavy stuff is gonna come down for quite a while, I’d keep playing…” (Caddyshack), “…chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do, it’s usually something pretty unusual…” (Stripes), “I don’t think it’s fair that you extort money from the college Carmine.., “If you mention the word extortion again, I’ll have your legs broken…” (Animal House), “…when I have been pushed.  I think it’s about time for somebody teach this varmint a little lesson about what it’s like to be an upstanding member of society… pumpin’ about 15,000 gallons of water down there to teach you a little bit of a lesson, is that it?  I ‘tink it is!” (Carl Spakler, played by Bill Murray, in the classic film about country clubs and the one percent v. the lowly help called caddies, centered around the golf club of BUSHWOOD).  May you rest in peace my brother in arms and I hope you get to make God laugh, ’cause you know you made all of US laugh until we cried.  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

Bon Voyage Sochi!

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 2:15 pm

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the pleasant, relatively warm and milky sun skied island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Sunday afternoon, the twenty-third day of February, 2014, a mild one out there; just returning from the dock where the Grey Lady high speed ferry arrives from that fair island of Nantucket, my dog ’shammy’ greeting all the passengers back on the mainland from that little rock 30 miles south/south east of Hyannis/Hyannis Port while we all enjoy the warmer weather we have been experiencing these past 48 hours…watch out though, cold weather to return soon.

The XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia will culminate tonight, or are in the process of that as I write these words, a day that is always bittersweet for the athletes and viewers alike.  It has been a wonderful Olympics as far as this reporter is concerned, wrapping up my personal viewing today as well (most of it spent in my pajamas baby!), for I have truly been engrossed in these games from start to finish, always amazed at how the whole scene really gets to me.  From the beauty of those opening ceremonies, to the great hockey, figure skating, snowboarding, ski jumping, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboard half pipe and other events, to the great, well just fill in the Olympic sport you like and I can assure you that it was great. Today, I watched Team Canada take the Gold in men’s hockey, to wit one commentator stated, “…the best team won” (3-1) and boy was he right as that NHL rich team took it to the Swedes from the get go, playing the puck more than the very talented team in yellow, who were awarded with the silver, Finland taking the bronze. The final medal count had Russia leading the way, followed by the Norway, Canada, the United States and Holland…who had gold medals with 11? well done Norway!  There is little doubt in my mind that these games truly can tear people (like this reporter) away from politics, even if just for a brief moment… Thanks for the memories and the puppy dogs Russia!  Please be nice to other living things as well, like people who love differently than you do, or the people of the Ukraine… The world is still, and always will be, watching.

Revolution is in the air of that aforementioned country, settling down a bit from the riots of barbed wire and fire just a few hours ago.  The president of the Ukraine is no more in Kiev (the capital), but the country is split in it’s loyalty–one siding with the EU/U.S. and the other with Vladimir Putin.  This is still a powder keg and we shall have to wait for the games to be over to get a handle on what will happen to that country in the very near future…stay tuned.

Of course, the Sunday talk shows will reveal more on what only a few good journalists (I’m lookin’ at you Rachel Maddow and Steve Kornacki of MSNBC!) have covered thus far this year–such as North Carolina’s problem with coal ash and the environment they hate so much.  It seems Governor Pat McCrory (R) of that fine state (former employee of Duke Energy…29 years) may have a little more explaining to do regarding the dumping of tons and tons of that poisonous crap into the Dan River, seeing that 18 subpoenas have been laid upon his desk.  Ooops.  The days of allowing big polluting disreputable corporate monsters to destroy OUR water ways and drinking water, like Duke Energy, are numbered.  The more “American People” these bastards poison, via their drinking supply tainted by chemicals and waste from said polluters, the more those American people are going to fight back and demand JUSTICE. Our water and indeed our air is under constant threat by the big oil and gas polluters, not to mention the bloody coal industry (all of whom OWN politicians, mostly republicans like our pal Pat from North Carolina!  You betcha a$$hole!), and what we need right now is to stand up collectively against the big money that is killing our democracy and the environment we all hold so dear, killing it slowly, one mountain top removal, one tainted stream, one drought stricken state, one aquifer at a time, until the whole FRACKING nation and world is decimated and ultimately destroyed, “for generations, if not all generations to come.”

You heard it here first, seacapecod.net, and we have not seen anything yet my friends when it comes to the biggest problem ever faced my mankind–GLOBAL WARMING!!! Keep your eyes to the sky this spring.  Have a nice Sunday afternoon everybody and may God Bless all the athletes, spectators, families, NBC television crews and talent, officials of Russia and the puppies coming home to the United States of America!  We thank you for the beautiful spectacle of what makes the human race GREAT.  SEA you in South Korea!  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

100 percent chance of snow…

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 10:28 am

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the cool and cloudy, soon to be snowy once again, island of Nantucket! Great to be back with you on this Tuesday morning, February 18th, 2014, waking up to a cloudy day that has overtaken the clear, cold, windless blue skied day of yesterday, where the region looked just like the image you SEA above, as we here on the Cape and Islands experienced yet another major snow event Sunday night, blizzard II, leaving a foot of snow and many without power, although it is turned back on by now I’m sure.  Yes, the ice shimmering on the tree branches looked like so many diamonds dancing in the azure sky, a weather pattern that I am sure our friends in Sochi, Russia wish they had about right now, with fog and rain prevailing today.

That’s right, the Winter Olympics Games, XXII, are well under way and what a gift it has been to view these events even if the weather has not been up to par.  The medal count has Russia and the U.S. with 19, followed by the Netherlands, 17, and Norway now with 18 baby! who could not capture gold in the men’s 4X10 Relay (Nordic skiing) this past Sunday, with 70 percent of Norway’s population looking on, many blaming the skis.  I remember Lillehammer in 1994 with 200,000 plus Norwegians camping out in the giant snows of Norway to watch this event…tell me Norwegians don’t take their Nordic skiing seriously.

So many stories coming out of Sochi, good or bad.  Take women’s ice hockey.  The U.S. will be playing Canada for the gold Thursday, not to mention the talk of the town, T.J. Oshie from the men’s squad, who dazzled the world with four goals in the epic shootout, eight rounds, when Russia and the U.S. skated to a 2-2 tie on Sunday.  I watched the game reel to reel LIVE at seven that morning and boy was it worth it…we shall see what happens in the next round.

Curling has been fun to turn on for a moment, just for the Norwegian pants, but I must say the ice dancing Gold win by the Americans yesterday was inspiring, a couple that has been together for 17 years, dancing when they were just little kids…  The U.S. Bobsledding Team also won by breaking a 62 year drought, winning bronze in the 2 man bobsled run yesterday, while Bode Miller, U.S. men’s skiing, also took the bronze in the giant slalom, which was, at the age of 36, making Bode the oldest man to win a medal in that event, bringing tears to his eyes and closing a circle for this reporter.  So much emotion at these games, with story after story forcing one to forget about dirty politics and rogue autocratic leaders who at least take some interest in the games, personally, even if many in the world still question the overall human rights question hanging around the neck of Mother Russia…

With a giant fog bank hovering over the mountains and sea in Sochi, Russia, some of the events from yesterday will be played out today, with many medals yet to be claimed…  So tune in and watch Al, Matt, Savannah and the rest of the crew at NBC, including Bob Costas, who returns after taking a few days off, as he was suffering from some kind of eye infection, feel better Bob!, and enjoy the games, they will bring a smile to your face.  All in all, the coverage has been very good, especially the field work, i.e. hockey and mountain reporting, so keep up the good work and GO USA! (and Norway!)…

Of course, Sochi, Russia and Cape Cod, Massachusetts are not the only places GLOBAL WARMING is reeking havoc.  Take California for example, they’ll tell ya!  Facing the most severe drought on record, much of California is in deep, deep trouble, which will equate to higher food prices, among other things, for the rest of US. The republican party will stay on “Obamacare” for the foreseeable future, therefore keeping the status quo alive and well, a.k.a. “sticking their heads in the sand like so many Ostriches…”, a line John Kerry stole from seacapecod.net a long time ago…that’s OK Mr. Secretary, you are welcome to that line anytime!  For to tackle this mind blowing problem–global mass emissions of green house gasses (like carbon dioxide/methane) into the fragile atmosphere (warming it), increasing the level of say carbon to 400 parts per million, effectively raising, some estimates predict, the earth’s surface temperature by four degrees, spelling doom for many if not all inhabitants of this green earth we all adore so–we all, the entire world, must work in concert together, as it is all interconnected and we don’t have that much ‘time’…

The republican party is, as earlier stated, completely blind to these scientific FACTS. Global warming is not a hoax or a phase.  It is being caused by MAN and if not impeded soon, will spell disaster in the way of stronger and stronger storms, rising sea levels, fatally higher temperatures, droughts as bad if not worse than the one currently gripping California, wild fires that take on new meaning of WILD and the creation of ‘the new normal’ where one would need a vast wardrobe (and a good boat), never knowing what to wear from one day to the next…living in weather patterns that no longer follow a natural path, nor a natural rhyme.  It is so heartbreaking to know that so many of our beautiful species will no longer be with us in that WILD and it makes this reporter very angry.  No one likes ignorant, greedy, mean spirited people–bullies–and that is exactly what the tea party wing of the republican party has become and I pray that they go away soon.  It is so sad to watch these ‘men’ make fools of themselves on national television, like Governor Pat McCrory of North Carolina, avoiding a real answer on the epic issue.

Of course, North Carolina’s coal industry is not hurting for money, with Duke Energy, a 50 billion dollar monster, continuing to use the state’s rivers as open sewers– tons of coal ash killing fish and alerting the world to their sins on US all, even if the good people of that coal producing state are too afraid to say anything about it, just like the people in West Virginia.  McCrory worked for Duke Energy for decades and recently was forced to stop law suits against his former employer, doing them a favor, while he slapped a token fine of 99,111 dollars on the water poisoning behemoth…  But what struck me as poster boy material for the republican politicians in this country (hell bent on destroying it for their plutocratic overlords) were his comments on ABC’s “This Week”, with George Stephenopolous, Sunday as he spoke of ‘cleaning up the environment’, right?  Right.  Take it away Governor!  “…I, ah, concentrate on cleaning the environment.  I think that’s where the argument should be…cleaning our air, cleaning our water and cleaning the ground…and ah, …, we cleaned up ‘Old Brownsfield’ and now we have great new developments…, but I think the whole issue of cleaning the environment is the issue we ‘ought to talk about, rather than getting into a debate, on the left or the right, about climate change or global warming … it’s all about  cleaning our environment and have a good quality of life for not only now, but for future generations…, the big ‘debate’ is how much is man made and how much just ‘naturally’ happens, as earth, er, ah, ‘evolves’ and ah, the question is what should we do about it and how much will it cost the consumer.”  Fabulous.

Couple that ignorance and sloth with congresswoman Marcia Blackburn, another republican who appeared this past Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press”, with David Gregory–joining Bill Nye, ‘the science guy’, a science educator of the highest order as he battles ignorance and greed everyday, in a “debate” about climate change.  I highly recommend watching the interview, for it was like watching a Great Horned Owl debate with a tiny mouse, therefore leaving little to the concept of ‘debate’, as the science guy literally ate the congresswoman for breakfast.  He explained that 97 percent of the legitimate global scientific community agrees without question in this FACT that the earth is warming exponentially (the other 3 percent is bought and paid for by Exxon-Mobil/Koch Industries or the like) and if we do not do something about it, mankind will go by the way of the Polar Bear, as one more bee hive and bear go by the wayside.  When will the majority of the American people, the real ’stock holders’ of this great nation, when will WE wake up and rally around leaders who speak out against these big time polluting bastards?  Speaking out against these “free market” criminals who are taking your kids and grand kids futures away…one Gulf, one national park, one clean, pristine river, one forest, one seashore at a time, until those God given miracles are drained of all ‘resources’, leaving a muddy puddle that will offer no relief for the soaring temperatures, rising seas and vanishing wildlife…  WAKE UP HOUSTON, We have a problem! Have a nice week folks and keep it tuned to NBC’s coverage of the XXII Winter Olympic Games–this is not a paid advertisement–it’s just a friendly reminder that the spirit of these games–LOVE–is what truly makes this world go round…  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

From Russia With LOVE!

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 10:08 am

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the cloudy, calm, cool and damp island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Friday, February 14th, 2014, Valentine’s Day…  After the storm alien ‘Kpax’ passed us on by late last night here on the Cape, leaving hundreds of thousands from South Carolina to Maine without power–hope they turn the heat back on soon–we are left with the day set aside for LOVE, so I pray you take advantage of it and buy someone a box of chocolate or something to that effect.  This is the Valentine’s Day card I wrote to all of my readers here at seacapecod.net, I hope you enjoy…

(written yesterday at three p.m. eastern)    I took a good week off from politics, “…that’s a lie!” (credit Jimmy Stewart in the classic film, “It’s a Wonderful Life”), as I am a political junkie who was very pleased that Speaker John Boehner and Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell passed a clean, continuing resolution of the debt ceiling yesterday, much to the chagrin of Senator Ted Cruz, defacto leader of the ‘tea party’…, gosh darnit, there I go again, where was I?  Sochi, Russia, ah yes, I have left my heart in that summer resort Russian President and CEO Vladamir Putin decided to hold the Olympics, yes sir I do remember now.  I am sitting here watching a nasty nor’easter roll on up the east coast, locally Hyannis Harbor, while taking in teams Russia and Sweden (women’s hockey) who have skated to a 2-1 score, Russia in the lead.  Immersing myself in the games and the coverage (keeping an eye on the coverage of the coverage, i.e. “The Daily Show, with Jon Stewart” or “Jimmy Kimmel Live”), I have to say it is all, including the straight NBC Today show stuff–all very funny material as most critics go after the lack of completion when it comes to the accommodations, to wit your friendly Russian hotel concierge states, “I will break you!” (credit the film genius of Rocky III, circa 1982, two years after the now defunct Soviet Union held the summer Olympics), isn’t that right Roker?  So far I have seen some great hockey games, Japan v. Canada, or was it Finland?  Oh well, I know I saw the ’skiathlon’, a brutal cross country skiing track, that takes man to the physical ends, with the dramatic finish of the winner crossing the finish line with absolutely no gas left in the tank.  The weather seems to be the big story however, with temperatures yesterday hitting seventy degrees in the Olympic village and sixty three on the mountain where all the the skiing and snowboarding is taking place…can someone say mashed potatoes?  Tough sledding indeed.  It is like spring conditions in the Rockies, as opposed to traditional cold winters associated with Mother Russia.  But it could not be global warming, for that is a hoax they only play in the good ‘ole US of A, am I right Senator Inhofe?  There I go again.  Keep it on the games man!  What’s wrong with you?  Sorry about that, so Sochi is located on the southern most tip on this giant land mass, with the mountains on one side and the Black Sea on the other.  Very beautiful, as the host country still leads this hockey game 2-1 in the third period, great game, yes, these Olympic games are wonderful despite global warming, crappy hotels, stray dogs (may all of them be saved, like the hero from Colorado, an Olympic snowboarder, who saved five of them, shipping those Russian pups back to that great state, keeping one for himself, Kudos bro!), too much alcohol and Matt Lauer in a hot tub thank you very much!, right Al?, lots of empty seats in many venues, melting snow, Russian’s anti-gay agenda, Aeroflot Airlines, the threat of terrorism and NBC Today show coverage, just kidding comrades, yup, even with all of that, when you take the time to look into the eyes of these young athletes, it simplifies life a bit–those eyes reflecting the exemplification of what hard work and opportunity, magically mixed together with family, friends and community support look like–pure GOLD. Perfection incarnate.  The Olympian represents all that is, dare I say, God like in human beings.  The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat are two sides to the same coin, a coin that represents all of our lives.  In this country, the U.S., the problem of the haves and the have nots is also a coin with those very same traits.  Except in the USA, go USA! go USA!, the game of life is rigged in the favor of the haves, or the infamous 1%, where “opportunity” is laid before their (plutocratic) feet, making it nearly impossible for them to lose much of anything, let alone becoming homeless; whereas a homeless man will never become the President of the United States, because he has a snowball’s chance in hell of ever clawing his way out of poverty, a vicious cycle that keeps most in this nation down and out, or on a treadmill where they work their whole life and realize in their nineties that they have been used and thrown away, like so much garbage.  The real garbage is within the tea party ideologue’s policies.  Poverty has been thrust upon the masses now because of similar policies dating back to their inception in the early 1980’s, under then President Ronald Reagan, poster boy for the troubled economic philosophy of ‘trickle down economics’, a ruse that has solidified the top one percent’s income, bolstering it during that thirty plus year period by 278 percent, while the bottom 90 percent have seen their wages actually go down, while productivity continues to skyrocket.  Gerry ‘meandered’ districts now buffet the head winds of change, with scared little politicians in their ’safe’ districts spinning out lie after lie about their opponents with the monies they legally attained from ‘The Brother’s Koch’, not to be confused with the “Brother’s Grimm”, who wrote scary fairy tales about creepy people kinda like the one’s I speak of presently.  These districts are for the most part white and rich, thus republican, normally not voting democratic, therefore keeping crazies like Ted Cruz in power, while the majority of the American people suffer.  They also keep the power by knowing that upwards of perhaps 50 percent of the ‘little people’ will vote against their own best interests, as they are lulled into a trance by the likes of FOX “NEWS” or radio hacks/haters like Rush Limbaugh, who convince them that these tea party nut jobs are the boys to help them find their wallets, when all along it was their puppet masters who stole it to begin with.

Looking out onto the harbor now, I can barely make it out, as the rains are coming down in sheets, falling furiously from the Heavens, and I am quite sure the power just went out.  Fear not though, as I am actually writing this blog today the old fashioned way, long hand, so I will be able to finish this post and wish you and yours and very fond and fine farewell for now (as I hopefully won’t be swept out to sea!), imploring you to tune into NBC’s myriad of stations covering the XXII Winter Olympic Games over in Sochi, Russia, as we enter into the tenth day of competition, with USA v. Russia facing off Saturday morning, 7:30 a.m. live, check it out.  These games are truly a great break from the miserable politicians in Washington D.C., what with their backward, short sighted, narcissistic and greedy ways, drawing up their districts in their own images, or rather the image of their “donors”, as they attend to the best interests of said donors, who are actually their plutocratic overlords who spent all of that money putting them in that puppet position to begin with…by golly!

And don’t you forget it or we will throw you off of a fu@cking balcony…“I must break you!” (credit that crazy jingoistic Rocky III movie from 1982 once again, to wit ‘ole Rock states to his giant Russian boxing opponent, “Go for it”…).  Sorry I could not tell you the score of the game I was watching.  I am still writing to you under candlelight, so I will make this brief… have a great day and week end folks!  Skol! Go Norway! (my grandfather Aakre hails from that great country!!) and Go USA! The Olympic Spirit is everywhere you look.  It is not always ‘out there’, rather it is ‘in here’, inside US all.  Find it and strive to win, for every dog has it’s day and for one little happy guy, he will be waggin’ his tail high in the Rockies soon!  That is what this humble reporter at seacapecod.net is talking about…LOVE. PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

Spotlight on Sochi

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 8:50 am

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the beautiful, sunny rather chilled island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this 8th day of February, 2014, an early Saturday to be sure, as the sun just rose above Nantucket Sound, with many in the country enjoying the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia right about now.  Twenty years ago, this humble reporter was in Lillehammer, Norway for the same games.  I took a month off from being ‘an insurance executive’ in Boston, flew to Sweden, via Amsterdam, stayed in Stockholm for a spell and then my buddy and I took the train to Oslo, never forget it, arriving just in time for the opening ceremonies…  The beauty of those opening ceremonies was beyond the word beautiful.  When we arrived in the little hamlet of Lillehammer, there was a palpable electricity in the air–filled not with fear, but with LOVE. Love of the games–the skiing, the skating, the soaring, the scoring; the scene itself was one I don’t believe any other Olympic host city will ever duplicate…perhaps it was the fact it was in happy Norway?  Be that as it may, I have also been to Russia, although back in 1984 it was called the U.S.S.R., the Soviet Union!  Brrrrrrrr!! Indeed, it was a cold, communistic country back then and apparently not a whole lot has changed… Only the style of Czar, clothing and car has changed, not the concentration of POWER–the fact it went from that communistic state to one of ‘capitalism’, a capitalism  that spiraled out of control in the 1990’s as the old Soviet Union fell apart and the wolves got all the spoils.  The country could be considered a dictatorship, or at best a quasi democratic compilation of bureaucrats who spent 50 billion dollars on these games, compared to less than three billion in Lillehammer.  There are over 70,000 soldiers/police roaming the streets of the Olympic village as well as the mountains where the Alpine and Nordic events take place.  There are roaming stray dogs that I pray are humanely taken care of by this host nation, so as not to add any more bad Carma to their already rather medieval stance and actions regarding LGBT real live people.  A little something the world is watching quite closely right about now, as the opening ceremonies took place roughly 24 hours ago, rebroadcasted on NBC last night.  The rest of the games will be televised on NBC for the next two weeks, enjoy! (check out MSNBC as well).  When I was in Norway, surrounded by the flags of 88 countries and the people to go along with them, I felt like I was in Heaven.  I was all tan and smiling in the sun, walking up the mountain side packed with tons of snow, four feet of fresh powder all around…watching humans literally fly in the air, whispering past the towering Norwegian pines and throngs of people, only to land safely with a giant roar from the crowd as they place a ribbon of gold around their collective necks–the Norwegians won 15 Gold Medals in 1994, singing, “We are the Champions” over and over again in the many bars scattered about Lillehammer…  Goldshlager anyone? If one were to sum up the experience of those games in a word, it would have to be MAGICAL.  Sochi, according to many reports from the media that are covering it thus far…not so much.  Problems with hotels, like cameras in showers? and spartan digs seem to be the most common complaint journalists have, but if there are no terror attacks then it will be a success, right?  Many are calling these “Putin’s Games” and why not?  Vlad has earned this and seems to be genuinely proud of his country as he reintroduces the world to Russian history–a history I am well familiar with, a sometimes dark tale that has a very rich and rough edge indeed.  When I was in Moscow and then Leningrad, now Saint Petersberg again, there were no McDonald’s or really any evidence of western capitalism anywhere.  Being a college student, visiting for a week, we found the black market and sold American Levis and “OP” shirts to our new found friends in say Leningrad for a couple of Rubles…Rubles we spent in Moscow on Champagne and the best caviar I have ever had in my life… So here’s to Russia! May they have a good Olympic experience, perhaps allowing their collective hearts to open up just a bit, considering the changing views of the world towards our gay brothers and sisters, who certainly don’t need any more violence to go their way…now do they Vlad? The SPIRIT of the Olympics is what it is all about and when you catch that, despite all of the bad news coming from the world media outlets, you will transcend the garbage that is going on in certain places globally, rise above it and immerse yourself in the beauty of the mountains, of the athletes, of the dreams and of the competition that make US all better as humans beings!  Go for the Gold USA!–especially Mikaela Shiffrin (hailing from the great state of Colorado) of the U.S. Ski Team, heck fire, all the athletes competing from 88 countries around this great big wonderful world of OURS–you make us all proud!  Have a great week end folks and please enjoy these XXII Winter Games, only on NBC/MSNBC! (not a paid Ad), it’s a nice break from politics!   PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

Pray for Polar Bears…

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the once again bone chilling cold, snowy island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this “5th” day of February, a white Wednesday here at the Hyannis Waterfront, trying to catch the Olympic Spirit this morning, with the games only 2 days away.  Russia will be hosting these winter athletic marvels in the resort town of Sochi, resting on the shores of the Black Sea…more on that Friday.  This week we have all been mourning the loss of one of the greats, Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died of an apparent heroin overdose sometime on Sunday; dying alone at his apartment in New York City.  Winning an Oscar for his role of Truman Capote in “Capote”, circa 2005, Hoffman marked fifty movies in his long career, but tragically short life, as he was only 46 when he passed from this earthly plane.  Most film critics would agree this was the actor of his generation with no one to fill that vacuum, leaving Hollywood just that much more “Transformer” like with one more sequel we all have to digest somehow.  God Speed and may you find that peace you were looking for~ Philip Seymour Hoffman ~ (1967-2014).  Moving ahead to happier things, yes that’s right!, we are going to speak of the Keystone Pipeline for a moment.  If the U.S. wishes to have a group of descendants that look favorably on our deeds in present day and ‘time’, I would implore the fine and good President to block this pipeline from going through.  It, like the recent Farm Bill that was passed by Congress (cutting 8 billion in food stamps for poor people, while promoting even more subsidies to wealthy farmers), is nothing more (with a few bells and whistles like literally 35 jobs, 35!, if the dirty pipeline is passed) than a boon for the oil and gas industry, with no benefits going to the people of this great land.  It will also lock this nation into a filthy energy policy for generations to come, while it promotes the use of tar sands oil that leaves a bigger carbon footprint than sweet crude.  Moreover, this pipeline is only being built so that it can go from the pristine forests of Alberta where it is being mined, through Montana, down into Nebraska, south to Louisiana where it would be loaded onto ships headed for China or the highest bidder, thereby not increasing our oil reserves at all, this being a global commodity that cares nothing about the United States or it’s people, let alone it’s future.  Many say these tar sands will be mined anyway, so we should just go ahead and build it, you know for safety, as it is safer than carrying oil on rail.  However, if we don’t build the pipeline, those dirty sands will stay in the ground, for even Canada, in particular British Columbia, a province to the west of Alberta, has shut down the idea of running a pipeline through that gorgeous topography.  So why should this nation take on that risk?  Money and lots of it for the most powerful industry on the planet–the oil and gas industry.  They are destroying our world in so many different ways it is hard to keep up.  I suggest your first homework assignment is to sign up for the CARBON CAPTURE REPORT–it will tell you everything you need to know.  Pretty soon there won’t be any water in California, as this drought is just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ so to speak.  The climate is not only warming, but changing permanently, as the weather patterns shift, creating massive, devastating droughts like the one we are experiencing right now in that great state of California, where this reporter lived for 20 years.  It breaks my heart to see the Sierra Nevada mountains bone dry, not to mention the reservoirs, the vineyards to the north and the dry coastal mountains to the south.  One hundred years from now, our grand kids kids will not be talking about Chris Christie’s political power grab, nor will they care about David Wildsteins’ evidence that proved the Governor of New Jersey shut down the lanes to the George Washington Bridge, while he lied about the fact he knew anything about it, adding in a little manipulation of Federal super storm Sandy relief monies, as tens of thousands of Jersey shore residents are still wondering when they will get the money to rebuild–15 plus months after the devastating Nor’easter around Halloween of 2012.  We have the technology to ween ourselves from the addiction to oil and like any addiction, it is at first very painful to address and subsequently go through the withdrawals.  However, there is no way out BUT through.  We cannot put our collective heads in the sand, like so many Ostriches, and DENY, “I had no knowledge of the lane closures…” (credit Chris Christie), that global warming is happening, right NOW!!!  This bloody Keystone pipeline is just one more example of our “abject stupidity” (credit Chris Christie), did he just call me stupid?, as a species, killing the priceless environment that sustains our very lives!  And like the Polar Bear you SEA above you, our fate will eventually go along the same path, perhaps not today, but soon if WE as a collective race, the human race, do not stand up to these insane insatiable global corporate monsters who, like a shark, need to constantly move and feed (PROFIT) or they “perish”.  But unlike a real shark, they take much more than they need, ever raping and pillaging our beautiful land, air and waters; buying politicians who are meant to protect and serve their citizenry, as the masses starve and the world becomes a giant hot cesspool.  Too much?  Wake up to reality folks, this is the NEWS and the more we educate our children to the SINS of this and previous generations, the better.  Do not sign onto the easy passage of this bloody Keystone Pipeline Mr. President, it is a bad precedent for future generations.  Please visit nokeystone.org and educate yourself to what is really at stake here, namely our autonomy and power over big oil and gas corporations that only serve to make profit, sometimes pollute and act as the PROBLEM, not the solution, to this generations’ environmental problems as well as countless future generations, for the more water you taint with your poisonous chemicals (596 in the FRACKING process for ‘natural gas’), the more oil you spill into our rivers, lakes, oceans, bays, sounds, gulfs, estuaries and streams, killing wildlife and eventually people, well, the more our children’s children will suffer and say to themselves, “…were they all on crack?”. It will not matter if they are rich or poor.  Black or white.  Gay or straight.  Jew or gentile.  They will only see the rising of the seas, stronger storms, more devastating droughts and wildfires, dying species (one after the other) of plant and animal, with clean and available water impossible for many to find and food being harder to grow bringing on mass famines as they, like school shootings, become commonplace.  Is this the future you want TEA PARTY spokesperson, or should I say corporate spokesperson, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas or Rand Paul of Kentucky?  Oh, that’s right, you can’t argue with crazy people or get a real answer out of them, for they will just offer up a robotic knee jerk reaction. Blurting out, sometimes with a red, sweaty face, “Benghazi!” or “IRS”  or “Obamacare, Obamacare, Obamacare!”, like some deranged African Gray parrot…  But you might be able to stop the looting (by some corporations and the politicians that are in bed with them) of our birth right as citizens of the United States of America, namely the beautiful bounty of the land, air and water, that is, at present moment FREE to ALL, just as God and the forefathers intended it to be.  Have a nice day folks and steer clear of the wooden nickles tossed about via FOX “NEWS” (n.i.n.o., or news in name only), they offer zero value– serving only to confuse it’s victims by lying to that block of at least 50 percent of the American television audience, while convincing the flock to vote against their own best interests every day of the week, well done FOX president and CEO Roger Ailes, you knucklehead!…  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
