Hail and Farewell 2013! Hello and Happy 2014!

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 3:52 pm

Greetings and salutations (not to mention libations) from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the sunny, snow dusted, soon to be blizzard bound island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this last day of the year, yes, the 31st day of December, 2013, a year we will all remember for so many different reasons and no matter your stripe, you cannot deny that it was a year full of electricity, yes?  So on this final day of ‘the year of the snake’, let us look back and SEA what actually happened and ponder what may occur in 2014…  In January, President Barack Obama was inaugurated to his second term as our very fine 44th U.S. President.  Historically speaking, and I am an historian, just being elected as our first African-American executive should have been enough, just ask Jackie Robinson breaking into baseball’s coveted club called Major League Baseball, he’ll tell ya!  With high hopes for the year, he was met with obstinate House and Senate members–fueled by Koch money–crazies from the right, the raid on our embassy in Benghazi, resulting in the deaths of Americans including Ambassador Stevens, embarrassing leaks by former NSA contractor Eric Snowden, whose unprecedented release of (only 1 percent of his data thus far) sensitive information regarding the NSA, i.e. the fact Americans are being spied upon as well as foreign leaders…adding in the botched health care roll out due to a failed website, made for a rather bloody nose to be sure.  He failed to pass any kind of gun legislation, although it was blocked by the NRA lobby to be sure, after the Sandy Hook tragedy that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, (God rest those children).  Of course he was applauded for standing firm against the Ted Cruz (R-TX)/Koch brothers/House republican government shutdown that plummeted that GOP brand’s popularity into the single digits, right around the positive feedback when it comes to pond scum and Ronald Reagan films.  Standing firm against their attempt to derail the ACA, the Affordable Care Act known now as “Obamacare”  (a republican think tank idea from the 1980’s to begin with)–indeed taking hostages while playing around with the debt limit and the global economy, democrats including the President should hold their heads up high.  And even though the President made no progress when it came to raising the minimum wage to a level where it should have been at this moment in our nation’s history if adjusted for inflation, $10.45 an hour, barely a living wage, the workers of America in low wage jobs, i.e. Walmart “always lower wages” and McDonald’s “I’m lovin’ slave wages” (a microcosm in the global problem called ‘the idolatry of MONEY’), began making noise with even Pope Francis, truly a great choice by TIME magazine for “person of the year” agreeing that greed and God do not go hand in hand, especially if you are a TRUE Christian, I know this President will make 2014 a year for action. One bright spot was a bipartisan agreement between Senator Patty Murray of Washington and congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who pushed through a two year budget that will effectively put an end to the constant ‘live by crisis to crisis’ philosophy defining this 113th congress, the ultimate do nothing congress, who passed only 55 bills into LAW this year, an all time low, which models their popularity with the even more unpopular ‘tea party’.  Even John Boehner got into the spirit when he snapped at a press conference recently…exclaiming after being told by his puppeteers who have been pulling his strings of late in regard to the government shutdown not working as they are trying to unseat and repeal “Obamacare”–“…are you kidding me!!!” Of course the Supreme Court had a few eye openers, such as “Shelby” where the 1965 Voting Rights Act took it on the chin, while it smiled on the LGBT community with even states like Utah joining in the rainbow coalition.  None of us really know what the republicans are thinking (what their “logic” is) as they try to expand the ‘tent’ by pissing off women across the spectrum (unless you live in Connecticut)–diving into their bedrooms and bodies, do nothing about immigration reform, take a blind eye and ignorant attitude towards global warming, continue allowing big polluters out their like the oil and gas industry to destroy our fresh water drinking sources like the Delaware River Basin/ NE Pennsylvania/New York’s southern tier (18 million people get their water from this aquifer) by Fracking for ‘natural gas’ (pumping 596 deadly chemicals into the ground in an unregulated industry that the clean water act of 1973 can’t touch–Frack you frackers!), a process whose carbon footprint is worse than that of coal, while they religiously side with the gun lobby so as to make horror shows like Newtown more likely in the future, as it sets up “stand your ground laws” in over a dozen states–starting with Florida, where Trayvon Martin, a boy was killed by a gun crazed lunatic who got off scot-free–insane laws designed to make this nation even more dangerous than it was before… just what the NRA ordered.   Give me a break Senator!  Thank God for groups like the ‘Dream Defenders’ who are trying to prop up these at risk kids who, like in all parts of our poorer urban countryside, attend falling down around your ears schools, set in dangerous neighborhoods, ‘urban deserts’ they call them to go along with their ‘food deserts’, yes, prop up these kids to get help before they fall prey to what is known as school to prison pipelines.  Like in New York, ’stopped and frisked’ constantly, profiled daily and put away with unjust mandatory minimums for non-violent drug offenses, mainly marijuana, put in for-profit prisons where the cycle just continues as they get out.  Hopefully Attorney General Eric Holder will do something about this epidemic for young black males as the new year begins, for as the old Ad from the 70’s states, “…the mind is a terrible thing to waste.”  With the wonderful and newly elected Pope Francis calling for the greed, now rampant in global corporations, to end, the Dow Jones Industrial hit new heights again on Friday, hitting well above 16,000 points as those big Wall Street banks only getting bigger to bail out with almost none of the Dodd-Frank regulations amounting to anything substantial.  Couple all of that with the constant push to exploit every ounce of energy from the most pristine parts of the world, thinking only of PROFIT and most certainly attaining said profit over people, it may be fair to say the corporations won and the end times are nigh.  However, I don’t believe that.  I believe this world is becoming more transparent by the second and that nothing can be done by the new world order that can’t be undone.  That is what was so inspiring about Malala, who I will leave you with today.  She is a young girl, around 15, from Afghanistan.  She was shot in the head by a member of the Taliban simply for voicing her desire to learn, to attend school.  Not just her, but she claimed with ferocity that every girl in that backward country should be allowed this right we all take for granted, the right to access KNOWLEDGE. After a triumphant recovery, she made the short list for the Nobel Peace Prize and has been seen across the airwaves here in the U.S. from Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” to the White House’s President Barack Obama…God’s speed Yousafzai Malala, God’s speed! For that is the story folks, of what is to come.  Take this past year and put it on steroids because we are in for a fascinating and fun ride!  God bless you all and thanks for tuning into seacapecod.net all year long.  I want to wish you and yours a wonderful, safe, prosperous and beautiful New Year!  SEA ya’ll next year, same bat time, same bat channel! PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the cold, bright and beautiful island of Nantucket! Great to be with you and yours on this 25th day of December, 2013–Christmas morning here on Cape Cod, Hyannis/Hyannis Port to be specific, and I personally want to wish you all a peaceful, joyous and safe day, no matter where in the world you may be reading this correspondence.  No news to report save that Santa made all of his scheduled stops, leaving presents for children in every age bracket, for as we all know, Christmas is a time of giving, wherein all the magic of the season is secretly stored.  In an age of constant material need, it’s nice to know we can set aside a day that was meant to reflect our love for each other, exchanging gifts that reflect that and look forward to the coming of a New Year, one that is hopefully better than the last.  But for now, just sit back and enjoy the day and take the Polar Express to Christmas town, sippin’ on some hot chocolate, while looking out at this beautiful world WE all share and love.  Have a wonderful day and holiday week ahead and we will SEA you here tomorrow at seacapecod.net.  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS!  Peace~M

Christmas Sea-sun

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 11:35 am

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the sunny, cold and calm island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this 12th day of December, 2013, Happy Birthday Nikki Lambert of Osterville!, a gorgeous one out there on the waters of Nantucket Sound, albeit a bit chilly, but a nice break from all of the grey clouds that have hovered over these here parts for quite some time…  The energy around the nation right now is high, as Christmas is just around the bend and all of the Grinches in D.C. are just about to wrap up what many are calling “the worst congress EVER”, only passing 55 bills into law, an all time low, while obstructing anything of value President Obama throws their way, such as immigration reform, a jobs act, or raising the minimum wage.  There was, however, a bi-partisan effort of late, spearheaded by congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senator Patty Murray of Washington.  A modest “small” budget proposal (put forth yesterday by those congressional negotiators) that would restore 63 billion in domestic and military spending, taking from the automatic (spending) sequester cuts,
Federal monies from “parks to the pentagon” (with spending offset by 85 billion in new fees and a reduction in spending leaving enough for a largely symbolic 20 billion dollar reduction in a 17 plus trillion dollar debt), avoiding another government shutdown as well as not defaulting on our debts.  The agreement, still to be passed by the House and Senate, should actually pass as we finally witnessed the Speaker of that House, John Boehner, react venomously to a reporter’s question regarding the opposition of what seems to be the fourth branch of government these days, the “tea party”, or more accurately, the corporate mandate via plutocratic powers such as the Koch brothers (billionaire owners of Koch Industries, “pollution is our middle name and middle finger!” or the newly fanged Heritage Action, whose ultimate goal is to control the levers of democracy, ever cushioning their profit and overall bottom line…the only thing they care about, yes those guys, asked what he thought ‘they’ would say about it, to wit he almost screamed, “…you mean the fu#kers who were against it before they even looked at it?!!  Those @@##$$’s?” Boehner turning a color that I don’t think I have ever seen before, his face flushed with red and orange, flashin’ at you like a jelly fish!  Like the green Grinch, Dr. Seuss gave to all of us so many years ago, these villains, many would say economic terrorists, have, as the Speaker stated so clearly yesterday, “…used our members and the American people,” and only see our Federal government as a tool to use towards their ends and to hell with the poor and the struggling working class who can barely make ends meet in a cold and hostile job market… a free market capitalism that has failed 99 percent of what the republicans always refer to “the American People”.  A free market that will not pay a living wage, thus keeping the “Grand Canyon” gap alive and well between the haves and the have nots.  Merry Christmas A$$holes!  I hope one of those Dickens’ ghosts visits you in your mansion on Oyster Harbors!  For as 1.3 million Americans lose their unemployment benefits directly after Christmas, while billions are further cut from the S.N.A.P. food stamp program, not to mention kids getting cut from ‘Head Start’, we have to wonder what, if anything, this fine leader of ours, President Barack Obama, can do in the next three years?  It seems he can’t even attend a funeral without getting lambasted by a bunch of delusional dirtballs over on FOX NEWS or take your pick of the right wing talk/hate radio…  Raul Castro, really?  The guy looked like a scared church mouse and is no Gaddafi is he Senator McCain?  Oh well, ’tis the season for silly and stupid.  Would it be amazing if a guy like Boehner or someone like him came out on stage one day and confessed his disdain for this whole front he has endured during his entire political career?  In other words, he was visited by the three ghosts, past, present and future, and could not escape the reality of his soul’s position in not only this life, but the next.  He comes out to the podium and announces he is leaving the republican party and has decided to retire in the Keys, Key West to be specific and open up an old folks home, with him, Mr. Speaker, giving ball room dancing lessons while working on his tan, golf game and collection of rare scotches.  Yes, he has given all of his wealth to the poor thus heeding what Jesus said so many moons ago, “…it is easier to pass a camel through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to pass into the Kingdom of Heaven.” Have a nice day and week end folks ever remembering the reality that FOX NEWS is a highly sophisticated brain washing operation that does not have your best interests in mind.  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

steps to redemption…

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the raw, cold, damp and dreary island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Saturday morning, December 7th, 2013, a cool, wet day out on the waters of Nantucket Sound, hoping you and yours are enjoying a nice day off from the rat race.  Of course, the world is mourning the loss of one of the greatest leaders’ in our lifetime, South African President Nelson Mandela, who many believe was the reason Apartheid, or “apart-ness” (the brutal racial policy of the white Dutch run government that ran the ANC into the ground and the entire black population with it, eventually placing Mandela in prison for 27 years) fell away, creating the free and rather peaceful South Africa that we see today.  Nelson Mandela represented much more than his humble one term presidency of that nation led on.  His amazing struggle against oppression and the spirit of forgiveness towards his oppressors transformed an entire nation forever, indeed changing the world too, and most say there will never be such a figure that was able to endure such a harsh sentence, while gaining so much for his fellow human beings.  It has been said of Mandela, “…he raised the spirits of both the oppressed and oppressors alike.”  WE, as a world, will miss him and pray that the moral terrorism he fought against, i.e. tyranny in any form, will never rear it’s ugly head again, hoping against hope this world wakes up to what is truly important and what is so most clearly not.  People and the LOVE therein is the STUFF that makes up our world, not profit.  WE are in this boat together, find a way to get along, especially those who hold great power, for that power demands great responsibility–raise minimum wages to a living reality, feed our people, walk your bloody Christian talk!  Have a nice day folks and rest of the week end and steer clear of FOX “News”, it contains deadly toxins to the soul; it is a medium that is not meant for human consumption, EVER…  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

‘Tis the Season…

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 12:30 pm

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the cool, sunny, festive island of Nantucket! Great to be with ‘ya’ll on this Wednesday morning, the 4th day of December, 2013, a nice seasonable day outside our studios here on the Hyannis waterfront, with visibility being no problem–searching out our favorite lighthouse, or one of them, adorning Hyannis Harbor, a twin if you will, to Brandt Point Lighthouse on Nantucket, only 27 nautical miles south/southeast of where I write these words.  With Thanksgiving in the rear view mirror, the nation looks to a few issues keeping the beltway media alive and well, with “Obamacare” taking top billing.  It seems the website has cured 90 percent of it’s ails and is signing up tens of thousands from California to Kentucky, the states whose exchanges and acceptance of Federal Medicaid monies have proven that the Affordable CARE Act is not only here to stay, but that it truly does offer millions of Americans the FREEDOM to not only have health care that an employer cannot take away or use as a carrot, but to pay a whole lot less for it, without preexisting conditions getting in the way of true health insurance, not to mention a lack of life time limits.  Children can stay on their parent’s plan and seniors are getting that doughnut hole filled saving millions.  It is also bringing the cost of medical care in this country down to historic lows, simultaneously reducing the deficit.  In time, this program will become as popular as Medicare and Social Security, and many republicans will finally come around to the FACT that it was their party’s idea to begin with, via the think tank “Heritage Foundation” in the early 90’s, and thus open up their states to accept that Medicaid money, thus insuring millions, 4.8 million Americans from sea to shining sea (26 states do not currently accept said monies from the Federal government, monies guaranteed for at least the next three years).  Of course, this means nothing to the likes of the irrelevant, but damn funny, Sarah Palin, a crazy ‘ole gal from Alaska who follows the folly of tea party poster boy Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who has been strangely silent about the “evil” Obamacare, all while explaining the big picture to a national audience of sad hostages who have to listen to her screech on and on in that horrible accent (50 percent of the American people watching FOX NEWS or listening to the hate radio equivalent like Rush Limbaugh whose job it is now to critique the Pope’s message of the world wide capitalism out of control idolatry of money and the dangers of the fraudulent economic LIE called “trickle down” economics, voo doo economics, where the rich get richer–as of right now the top one percent take in 20 percent of the nation’s income–and global indifference rules the day while millions starve and many become refugees (Syria) from wars reflecting and promoting this very dangerous fiscal philosophy) and tragically believe the nonsense that spews from what I assume is a mouth.  She represents the cartoon caricature that embodies this entire new republican party, a party, like much of the country, that has been hijacked by billionaire plutocrats, I’m lookin’ at you David and Charles Koch!, whose only goal is to–and I quote the famous “tax quack of the hill”, the very dishonorable Grover Norquist–”shrink the government down to the size where we could drown it in the bathtub.”  Nice… and Merry f#$king Christmas to you too Jackass!  Just ask the millions who will see their food stamps get reduced by 40 billion dollars, if the House has their way, what they think of the republican platform of cut programs to the poor?  Ask the seniors who get vital nourishment from the program ‘meals on wheels’, or the children getting ready for their futures with the program “Head Start”…  Go ahead and ask.  I’ll bet they would LOVE to tell ya what they think of you Paul–you and your heartless austerity dressed up like happy little policies–or better yet, your gosh darn sin. Let’s ask the employees striking all over the country, full time employees working at Walmart, barely making it on eight bucks an hour, a little above the Federal minimum wage of 7.25 an hour, hardly a living wage, yes, ask them if they think congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and the rest of the extremist nut jobs on the right are for real?  Ask them if they think those republican ‘leaders’ representing them are morally viable when they say, for instance, that raising the minimum wage is a bad idea and it would lead to job loss with no increase in economic output (both false).  Yes sir, let US continue as we have for the past fifty years or so, since 1960, with the top one percent’s income going up 271 percent in that period of time while the bottom 90 percent seeing it’s wages inching up by 22 percent or in another word, stagnant.  There is no doubt that this abomination cannot continue if we want to remain the great democratic nation that we are.  Our democracy dies a little bit every time we rig an election with “corporate speech”, restrict the vote, take away rights from women, remain blind to our need for better education, well, you fill in the blank.  The story remains the same, but it does not have to.  Globalization may be the new norm, but so to is social media and the FACT this nation is getting browner, not whiter.  Food for thought Mr. Speaker, food for thought.  Have a nice day folks!  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
