Affordable. Health. Care. Law…

Filed under: Blog — Michael @ 4:43 pm

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the cloudy, breezy, seasonally cool island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this Friday afternoon, the 27th day of September, 2013, a beautiful day on Cape, Hyannis to be specific, visiting Truro and Provincetown yesterday, with similar weather–cool clouds, an ocean breeze with bursts of that New England autumn sunshine illuminating the still green leaved maples, oaks and beech trees as they await their turn to shine in a month or so, when the leaves turn bright red, yellow and orange…quite the sight indeed.  How’s it going?  Well, if you are in the top one percent of ye ‘ole income bracket, I imagine you are doing quite well indeed.  As the crumbling middle class and ever growing number of working poor, who have not seen their or the middle class’ income go up in at least three decades, toil and spin to make ends meet, no ends so paramount as feeding themselves and their kids (as the GOP far right cuts billions from food stamp programs nationwide) may have some light at the end of a very dark tunnel–i.e. the implementation of the “Affordable Care Act” turned into law in 2010 by the great President Barack Obama, coming soon to an insurance exchange near your computer soon…October 1st to be exact.  It is an empirical FACT that 56 percent of the uninsured and under-insured people, citizens of this great land, will pay less than $100 dollars a month for life saving insurance that is yours personally.  Insurance that no longer is the kind that tethers people to a dead end job, all for the sake of the “benefits”.  Insurance that brings the Peace of Mind that said insurance companies cannot deny care due to a pre-existing condition (the major factor many in this nation go bankrupt, because they could simply not afford the whims of the underwriting department at say Cigna, Aetna, Prudential or many others guilty of this immoral practice of denying coverage whenever possible to boost profits.  Insurance that will allow parents to keep their kids on his or her plan until they are age 26.  Among many other benefits to the public at large, this will HELP our fragile economy, not hurt it.  50 percent of our gross national product is wrapped up in health care, formally for profit at the expense of everyone else.  This new kind of model, brings about incentives for providers to create better results, not more tests, a real win/win for both the doc and the patient.  Before this law and indeed today, there are approximately 30-40 million people without any access to real health insurance.  Either because of the exorbitant costs with individual insurance today, just ask anybody, or because they are denied due to a previous ‘condition’, their only avenue for medical care is the emergency room, a sad fact of life for many of our brothers and sisters out there in the dark and cold.  Shame on US. This model and indeed philosophy of the modern day American Insurance carrier has been sewn into the fabric of said industry and their underwriting practices prove it.  Where, like so many other greedy corporations out there, the modus operandi is and always will be, presumably, “profit over people”. This IS the fundamental reason why the likes of a Ted Cruz, lizard like Senator from the great state of Texas (please Google the film “Monster’s Inc.”, starring the greats Billy Crystal and John Goodman and the villainous lizard who enjoyed scaring little children).  Of course in Cruz’s case, he likes to scare the “little people of America” by attempting to dupe and put fear into those citizens minds by showing sick ads–like the one served up recently by the good ‘ole Koch brothers–while simultaneously poisoning the well with a constant parade of falsehoods on Fox News, where the content is always skewed to the wealthy and republican view of the world, a world that only the rich need apply.  The reason for this holding the country hostage for their insane demands is simple, they Know that if “Obamacare” is understood and utilized by the American people, those people will embrace it and grow to love it.  And as that program blossoms ten years from now it will be as popular as either Social Security or Medicare.  This IS the FACT. Moreover, “Obamacare” is a program that is already paid for by it’s own design, as we take the whole of the country, all of the people and mandate that we must all have insurance, creating pools of risk, with the onset of many younger folks joining in dispersing risk with the older folks all while creating a premium that most if not all people’s can afford, with subsidies for those in need.  This LAW is unlike George W. Bush’s prescription drug benefit bill that added a trillion dollars to our national debt, yet another tab placed on the American people.  This program will work if you just try it.  Like our friend Dr. Seuss once said in the book “Green Eggs and Ham”–”I like them, I like them, Sam I am, I like Green Eggs and Ham”.  To wit Sam probably simply smiled and said to himself… “I told you so.”  I can’t for the life of me figure out why these so called “Christian” tea party, dangerous far right wing nut jobs are so hell bent on hurting the American people when a solution is at hand for a unaffordable system of “health” that is unsustainable in the future.  Why are they holding the country hostage by threatening to shut the government down in a few hours if their demands are not met, hurting our economy and world markets, not to mention our reputation as a nation that pays it’s bills.  Sounds like extortion to me.  Why do they act this way?  Oh yeah, I almost forgot, they’re assh%les.  The plutocrats I referred to at the top of the blog are calling the shots in the House and much of the Senate.  This fake astroturf grass roots ‘tea party’ is (not popular amongst many established and well respected republicans who have the future of the party in mind) nothing more than an ego driven stunt by a power hungry Senator doing the will of his puppet masters.  These are, for the most part, bought men, bought by billionaires like the ‘Brother’s Koch’ who clearly do not believe in a nation built on the founding father’s principal of “Of the people, By the people and For the people.”  Stay tuned folks and more importantly stay informed, educated to the FACTS that are so easily attained in the ‘Age of Google’.  Have a nice week end!  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

Moose U!

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the cool, sunny, gorgeous island of Nantucket! Great to be back with you after a long summer on Cape and aforementioned islands that I hold so dear.  Today is Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 and it is a chilly one out there as I look to my pumpkin on my deck overlooking the Steamship Authority here in Hyannis, ‘where the ocean meets the sky’ and I anticipate that proverbial ‘frost on said pumpkin’ soon as the days are getting shorter and the cooler weather is moving in.  As I watched the sunrise over Nantucket Harbor at Kalmus Beach only a few moments ago, I was reminded of the truism that–it is always darkest before the dawn. For as that sun rose I realized that it truly was a new day and the insanity that exists in the extreme republican faction in this fair nation will not go far, as the arc of morality always bends towards JUSTICE, a concept this country was built on.  237 years ago a few brave men fought the tyranny that was thrust on them from their ‘overlords’ in England, being seen as merely tenants in a slum, slaves held hostage to the whims of an elitist class, caring nothing for the people they claimed as their subjects.  Flash forward to today and the fight over the debt ceiling and the possible government shutdown as this country defaults on it’s obligations to the world at large, an unprecedented move that could send the fragile U.S. economy into a tailspin not to mention world markets and the now global macroeconomic reality.  And who better to represent this nut job group of thugs and bullies but Sarah Palin from Moose U, a fine student of that University, shooting innocent animals for sport and spouting off nonsense that keeps the late night comedians fully employed.  Paired up with the wacky Senator Ted Cruz from Texas, funded by the Koch Brothers and other oligarchs whose wish is to turn this nation into a plutocracy and putting all black and brown people in jail.  These jokers really think they can turn the tide of history, a history that they are clearly on the wrong side of.  There will be a reckoning and when it is all said and done, democracy, with a small ‘d‘, will reign true and free once again.  The whole argument, an argument that sane republicans, and there are many, many friends of mine, is to defund the Affordable Care Act, a LAW by the way, effectively holding the country hostage (please Google “Stockholm Syndrome”) so that the insurance industry can continue making money hand over fist while denying millions common decency in the form of affordable health care.  Moreover, it is the FACT that these folks, high on crack, are hell bent on stopping ANYTHING President Obama is trying to accomplish for the sake of the nation as a whole.  Again, with the hope, are you listening David Koch?, to transform the United States of America into “The United States of Exxon-Mobile & Friends”.  Pity that.  So on this beautiful new day, stop and give some attention to the situation at hand, for as bad as Syria is, with the gassing of it’s own people and all, it pales in comparison to what the ‘Fracking’ for “natural gas”, producing record profits for billionaires like the Koch brothers, is doing to our water and air, poisoning people from sea to shining sea with their secret blend of 596 deadly chemicals the EPA can’t even investigate.  Pray for this nation folks, for it is worth saving.  Have a nice day!  PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M

A thought…

Greetings and salutations from the sand, sun and surf of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and the breezy, overcast and warm inviting island of Nantucket! Great to be with you on this 31st day of August, 2013, a beautiful Saturday morning on Cape, Hyannis/Hyannis Port to be precise, as we all take in what transpired over the past few days in Washington D.C., of course commemorating the famous march on the National Mall in 1963 that sent shock waves across the bow of many whose lives were transformed forever by a great man who stood for nothing but LOVE and the dream therein.  Of course that day has passed as many wind down their summer vacations and kids go back to school, but to quote the great Caroline Kennedy, now Ambassador to the country of Japan, a quote that IS an ancient Japanese proverb, “…although the waters may have flowed by, the river remains the same”–I am always humbled and honored that I have known these great people who think of others more than they do of themselves, a trait I believe all of US deep down aspire to.  I think of that today because of what the world looked like fifty years ago, looking to that dream of MLK, and realizing that many of those dreams have come into fruition.   Although we still have a long way to go, i.e. eliminating wars, hunger, disease, income disparities and racial injustice among others, I truly believe that this nation of immigrants can REAL EYES what is most at stake and fight to preserve what has already been written.   So pray for the Middle East today, finding some common sense to Syrian aggression and the pain and suffering violence causes us all. For we are truly all one, on this little blue rock we call earth and home for the moment. After all, it is only the moment WE all have. The past being a cashed check and the future a promissory note.    Bring the republican party back to it’s senses God, for it is truly NOT the republican party of my grandfathers–the party of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. God Bless you all on this Labor Day week end and please come on back to the Cape and aforementioned islands–we will, as always, LEAVE THE LIGHT on for ya!   PRESERVE THE WILDERNESS! Peace~M
